Helping your child to talk

Your child’s language development will accelerate substantially in the first few years of life, going from first words through complete phrases. However, it might be challenging to determine if they are reaching the proper milestone.

The first three years of age is the critical period of your child to talk:

1-year-old : Preparation period to talk
1-2 years old : Outbreak of learning to talk
2-3-year-old : Speech development

Different periods will require different training methods. So, how to teach a child to learn to talk?

Create a proper atmosphere

The ability to speak is one of the basic skills that your child must learn. If you want to make your child learn how to speak, you must first create a pleasant environment for them to learn the language. You need to try talking and making conversations with your child in everyday life. Give enough attention and verbal stimulation to your child, so they start to talk.

Diligent practice

Some 2 years old children can only say a few words, but they are able to understand the parents. They usually have problems in pronunciation due to the lack of pronunciation exercises. So, teach your child the correct pronunciation of words slowly, syllable by syllable. Praise and encourage your child when they’re doing well.

Correct guidance

If your 2-year-old child is still using facial expressions or gestures to request for something, do not give in until they use proper language to ask for it. It may be difficult in the beginning, but once they start speaking up, they’ll be fine.

Seek medical help

By 2 years and older, your child should be able to express their wishes better. However, if you find that your child is reluctant to speak, you can seek help from a medical or language expert. This is to check if the speech delay is due to any underlying medical condition that needs to be treated.

All in all, teach your child to learn to speak with patience and perseverance and always give a lot of encouragement. It’s important to remember that not every child is the same. Children reach milestones at different ages. Talk to your child’s healthcare provider if you are suspicious that your child is not developing speech and language skills correctly.
