Men get pregnant too: Understanding the Couvade syndrome

Couvade syndrome, also known as sympathetic pregnancy, is a phenomenon in which expectant fathers experience physical and psychological symptoms similar to those of their pregnant partners.

These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, mood swings, changes in appetite, and even contractions.

Although couvade syndrome is not recognized as a formal medical diagnosis, it is a widely recognized phenomenon that has been reported across cultures and throughout history.

While the exact cause of couvade syndrome is not known, there are several theories that attempt to explain why some men experience symptoms during their partner’s pregnancy.

One theory is that couvade syndrome is a physical manifestation of anxiety and stress experienced by men as they prepare for fatherhood. Becoming a parent is a major life change, and many men may experience anxiety, worry, and uncertainty about their new role.

This stress can manifest as physical symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, and changes in appetite.

Another theory is that hormonal changes in men may play a role in couvade syndrome. Some studies have found that men’s hormone levels, including testosterone and cortisol, can change during their partner’s pregnancy.

Psychological factors may also play a role in couvade syndrome. Men may feel left out of the pregnancy experience or struggle to adjust to the changes that occur as their partner’s body changes. This can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, which can manifest as physical symptoms.

While couvade syndrome is generally considered harmless and temporary, some men may experience significant physical or psychological distress. If you are experiencing symptoms of couvade syndrome, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider. They can help you manage your symptoms and provide support as you prepare for fatherhood.
