Do you remember your baby’s first smile? It is an important sign of growth and development!
You will feel very happy the moment you see your baby smile for the first time.
Smiling is a natural reflex
A baby’s smile at an early age may just be his/her natural reflex, it may not be a true smile. Psychologists call it the social smile. It is just like exercising the movements of the mouth. The most common action is by raising the corners of the mouth and moving the muscles around the mouth. Some studies suggest that 2 to 12 hours after birth, infants will experience facial movements like smiling during sleep or when they are sleepy. These actions may be subtle, some parents may not even notice it.
Baby’s first smile
Studies have shown that out of 400 babies, less than 1% of babies smile at 2 weeks after birth, 11% of babies smile at 2 to 3 weeks after birth; 49% of babies smile at 3 to 4 weeks after birth and babies who smile at 4 to 5 weeks after birth account for 21%; babies who smile at 5 to 6 weeks old account for 19%.
Smiling = intelligence?
When a baby smiles, it is a reminder of growth and development. Some say that children who smile earlier may have a higher level of intelligence. Usually, children smile within 4 to 6 weeks after birth. If the baby does not smile or laugh at 8 weeks old, parents should pay more attention to the baby’s development and level of intelligence.
