Can babies eat zinc supplements?

Babies and Zinc Nutrition

Zinc is one of the elements necessary to maintain human life. It is determined that the zinc content in animal-based foods is higher than that of plant-based foods, and the amino acids produced after the digestion of animal protein can promote the absorption of zinc. Therefore, babies can consume more animal-based food for zinc supplementation.

When do babies need zinc supplements

Malnourished babies should be given supplement zinc. Enzymes in the human body contain zinc and it is used for the growth and development of the baby.  Therefore, if the baby is found to be weak and sick, the zinc content can be determined if necessary, and zinc supplement products can be taken under the guidance of a doctor.

Babies with anorexia should take zinc supplements. It is medically found that the lack of zinc in the baby will not only affect the normal body growth and development process, but also have a variety of symptoms, such as loss of appetite, decreased taste, fatigue, weight loss, and even anorexia.

Babies with poor eyesight should take zinc supplements because zinc participates in the synthesis of vitamin A and mobilizes vitamin A in the liver to the plasma to produce melanin. Zinc benefits the eye and can enhance night vision.

Babies with poor immunity should supplement zinc as it plays an important role in nucleic acid synthesis. When zinc is deficient in the body, the  immune function of the body decreases, and the body is extremely vulnerable to an infection.

Find out the key points of baby zinc supplementation

We all know that zinc deficiency will adversely affect your baby’s growth.  For babies after weaning, zinc-rich foods should be supplemented. Zinc-rich foods are  beef, lamb, animal liver, peanuts, soybeans, carrots, and oysters. The artificially fed baby should start to add easily absorbed zinc-rich food supplements from 4 months such as egg yolk, fish, animal liver, oysters, peanut flour and walnut kernel powder.

As for children after 5 years old, they can take in enough zinc from food. Therefore, parents should educate their children from childhood to develop a good eating habit.  In this way, the child will generally not lack zinc. Usually one should also pay attention to not to let children eat too much sugar and sweets, so as not to affect the absorption of zinc.

Precautions for baby zinc supplementation

Calcium and zinc can not be supplemented together, because calcium will seize the carrier of zinc and affect absorption. If you must add calcium and zinc at the same time, at least take a 30 minutes interval, so that the body can reasonably absorb the two nutrients.

Zinc is a trace element, so supplementation must be moderate. Excessive intake can also cause poisoning, which can cause fever, anemia, growth retardation, joint bleeding, bone breakdown, kidney failure, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, etc.
